Upon arriving in Roswell we were bombarded by what you would expect, aliens! The most popular by far was a wooden carved alien painted various colors, green being the most common. The RV park we stayed at also had plastic alien statues in various poses and some with props. And, lucky for the visitors, they were for sale.

Alamogordo NM is the closest city to White Sands National Monument, so we made a few stops on our way out including to the excellent space museum there as well as to one of the pistachio farm stores.

Justin and I had been talking privately without the girls about keeping Kara verses bringing her back to the shelter where we originally found her. The shelter was big about if the pet wasn’t a good fit within the first 30 days you could bring it back for a full refund. I think they probably make this rule so that new owners don’t keep a pet out of money guilt when they know it’s a bad fit.

Onward we went to Los Alamos. I had mixed feelings about visiting this place. It was such a big part of history and there were many brilliant scientists who lived here, but history that was made here also killed hundreds of thousands. Devastating.

You know how you hear of people say they woke up after being in Vegas to the realization that they have made some shocking choices? Well, I’m not much of a Vegas girl but we did just make a fairly spur of the moment choice that was definitely crazy. Were we drugged?? I’m not ruling it out. No, we didn’t sell our home to be full time on the road. We got a kitten!

We had been planning to go to the Balloon Fiesta in Albuquerque for some time, however we weren’t planning it a year in advance like most others therefore we could only find a camping spot for 3 out of the 9 nights of the fiesta. Eh, better than nothing!

Off to the city of Durango we went! There were so many fun things to do in this cute little city it was hard to choose. We decided that we would first check out their science museum since our membership to our Portland science museum got us in free and it was closing soon after our arrival.

We had a long driving day with a promised swimming pool reward at the end of it. The girls did great for most of the trip and we were able to arrive at Canyonlands RV Park around 2pm. Not too bad! We had time to have a good swim in the pool while Justin went grocery shopping, eat a delicious giant salad for dinner PLUS go to the playground before it was reading time. Woo! Success!

From our camp at Upper Teton View, our plan was to go into Grand Teton National Park on this day, but since the forecast called for a very cold rainy day we decided to make that our city exploring day as we would be in and out of warm dry buildings to break up the cold.
